Japans new prime minister is - at least verbally - escalating the geopolitical powder keg that is the situation around Taiwan. That the Japanese government would follow this course if no electoral shift comes has been clear for a few years now, but the window of opportunity for deescalation is closing. But as so often, we shouldn't reduce a nation to its foreign policy. Japan also had the chance this year to present itself in all its facets by hosting the international Expo, which I could visit in June during a research trip conducted by Journalists Network that I had the privilege to join. Although the Expo has lost a lot of the worldwide attention it used to garner, I'd say it still offers unique insights into how governments want their countries to be seen on the world stage. As it is, an EXPO is definitely worth a visit, but you'd be well advised to pick and choose what you want to see beforehand, since the spectacle is to large and disorienting for a unplanned visit.
